Loss of Green Space

Southwark Council have approved the development of flats on Dulwich Hamlets Football Ground which involves the moving of the ground onto the space occupied by the astroturf pitch. This is Metropolitan Open Land and is meant to be protected for the use of the community. Indeed on many a walk through Greendale, local children can be seen playing on the space and running off the pounds that come from the sofa / video game combination.

The Camberwell Society objected to the development. We now hear that Friends of Greendale have petitioned the Mayor to order Southwark to refuse the permission. This is his right to do so.

It is noted that there is no Master Plan for the area and that the part of the Sainsbury's car park alongside Dog Kennel Hill is under utilised and could be given over for building.

If you feel passionate that open land should be saved for the generations then you can email the Mayor at mayor@london.gov.uk quoting reference 'Development GLA/0083c/01' as soon as possible. The Friends of Greendale have suggested that you may wish to raise issues such as:

- Failure of the Southwark planning committee properly to take into account the existing section 106 Agreement entered into when Sainsbury's was built, which requires the existing DHFC ground to be used for sporting, recreational or educational purposes.

- inappropriate development on Metropolitan Open Land.

- Failure of Southwark Council to investigate properly alternative options, such as a redevelopment of the existing stadium and/or better utilisation of the open car park land alongside Dog Kennel Hill..

- No suitable facilities for many existing users of the Astroturf.

- Failure to take into account the play and recreation needs of the local community.
