The Camberwell Society

Society for those living, working or interested in Camberwell

The Camberwell Society monitors developments proposed for all forms of transport serving the area and campaigns for improvements. The Society places official responses to consultations on all transport subjects where there is clear benefit for all members. The Society reserves its position where members’ interests are divided.

The blog below is intended to alert members to changes that are planned or proposed.

TfL Central Bus Route Curtailment

Thank you to members who responded to the Society's email and made a submission to TfL.

TfL are attempting to save money by truncating and revising some Central London bus routes. Camberwell will lose out:

a) the 171 would terminate at Elephant and not serve Southbank and Holborn as currently

b) the 45 would also terminate at Elephant and not serve Kings X / St Pancras as currently

c) the 40 would no longer serve London Bridge and Fenchurch St but instead go over Blackfriars Bridge and terminate in Clerkenwell

The consultation closed on 9th November 2018. The Camberwell Society lodged it's strong objection to the cuts:

Camberwell has lost: the Victoria to London Bridge loop line, the Bakerloo Line extension, the cross-river tram, Camberwell Station and now there is no connection proposed from the Overground (Clapham Junction line) to the Bakerloo extension. In certain cases, the good level of bus service at Camberwell has been given as reason not to improve other transport services. Now TfL plan to curtail this level of service as well and would lead to a direct loss of facility for residents and businesses in Camberwell and around.

Camberwell has a high proportion of diverse ethnicity. It also has high poverty levels and high levels of illnesses (physical and mental) when compared to the rest of London. The Camberwell Society objects strongly to the proposals to curtail cross-river bus routing. The combination of cuts makes the lives of bus users significantly more complex as many will have to change bus, a process that can be stressful and time consuming. The users most affected are likely to be those who are least able to cope.

TfL attended the Community Council Meeting at Theatre Peckham (Havil St, Camberwell) on 13th November but, disappointingly, brought no fresh thoughts.

TfL's response to the consultation is due in the New Year. The Camberwell Society will continue to monitor.
