March 2026 Newsletter

March blows in like a lion. Duck the squalls in Camberwell’s increasingly celebrated eateries and judge our latest Michelin star on YouTube via Tasting Camberwell’s verdict: London’s best food neighbourhood? Prefer to hunker down? Try comedy, live music or Danielle Moylan’s talk — from humanitarian emergencies to Lala Books — on Monday in the crypt of St Giles’. Keep children busy with Easter fun and read on for warmer homes, better buses and two inspiring businesses.

Cold last winter? Retrofit this spring
Shivering through the recent cold spell? Dreading another winter of soaring energy bills and draughty rooms? At this year’s Camberwell Society AGM, we’re putting warmth, comfort and practical solutions centre stage.

On Wednesday 22 April, 7 pm at Love Walk United Reformed Church, a panel of residents will share their real-life experiences of retrofitting: — what worked, what didn’t, and what they wish they’d known sooner.

We will be joined by South East London Community Energy (SELCE), an independent, not-for-profit energy co-operative funded by Southwark Council. SELCE provides impartial advice.

Together we’ll bust common retrofit myths around insulation (and why ventilation matters), solar panels, heat pumps and window treatments. Tried insulation that led to damp? Wondering what suits a period terrace versus a modern flat? We’ll explore the four main retrofit approaches, funding options, grants and practical next steps

To make it interactive, we’ll invite you to identify your property type on arrival, so discussion reflects the homes actually in the room.

Imagine a home that’s cosy in winter, cooler in summer, healthier to live in — and cheaper to run. SELCE can also advise on discounts, grants, energy debt support and small measures that could save up to £200 a year. Join us at the AGM.

And you’d like to go deeper, sign up for SELCE’s new fortnightly myth-busting retrofit sessions at the Grove House Tavern. To register for the Grove House Tavern sessions, email Hanna Tweg hanna@selce.org.uk.

Hunt. Hop. Hooray.

Camberwell heads to Chelsea

Camberwell is going to Chelsea — and it’s taking young minds with it.

This may  at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026, YoungMinds will unveil its first ever show garden — designed by Charlie Chase of Chase Gardens, whose team is based at Cornerstone Studios near Burgess Park.

This is not just about plants. It’s about pressure. With one in five young people experiencing a probable mental health condition, the garden tackles the weight many carry — poverty, inequality, exam stress and the online world — symbolised by two four-tonne boulders split by bright yellow flowers growing through. Strength under strain. Hope breaking ground.

Charlie’s inspiration is personal. After losing his mother, he turned to gardening — her passion — and found a path through grief. That journey now shapes a biodiverse, plant-rich design that places community at its heart. A habitat wall will attract insects and wildlife, echoing the message: no young person should feel alone.

Young people themselves will help shape the garden at Chelsea and beyond. After the show, the garden will be relocated and used by Chase Gardens to host gardening sessions with the aim of opening up horticulture, and the potential career paths available, to young people who would otherwise not have the opportunity to engage in gardening.

Camberwell’s creative roots are travelling to the world’s most famous flower show — carrying a simple idea. Nature nurtures .Community strengthens. Young minds can thrive.

Sleaze turns the tide

Local band Sleaze (you may have seen them at The Joiners) are releasing a new album Sleaze Pleaze — stacked with rallying cries like “The People Have the Strength to Turn the Tide”. The album’s images were shot in SE5 at Zap Studios.

Hidden down Vanguard Court — “the Yard” to those in the know — a former suitcase factory turned creative courtyard, Zap is a high-voltage hub at its heart. Photographer Simon Webb brings vibrant, high-octane colour and a flash of humour to every frame. His white infinity cove — a seamless curve photographers love because it makes shadows behave and gives editors one less thing to crop — has framed Taskmaster campaigns and The Guardian’s In Focus portraits.

As a working musician, Simon is inspired by Camberwell’s creative mix. “There’s real energy here — bands rehearsing, makers building, neighbours collaborating. Zap grows out of that. It’s a studio for shoots, but also a space for talks, classes, screenings and whatever the community wants to make happen next.”

Set along the Yard’s cobbles, the studio sits among jewellers, potters and musicians. At the other end is the recording studio used by the Chemical Brothers.

Camberwell doesn’t pose politely.  It plugs in.

Stop. Look. Bus.

Your ride could get quicker. And you get a say.

Transport for London has awarded Southwark up to £10 million to improve bus journeys along the corridor from London Bridge to Camberwell Green and on to Goose Green. The aim? To cut journey times by up to 30 per cent, boost reliability, improve road safety and support zero-emission buses.

If you’ve ever waited on Walworth Road wondering whether walking might be faster… this is your moment.

Better Bus Southwark is in its first phase. Before designs are drawn, the council wants your real-world experience — the bottlenecks, near misses, bus lanes blocked by delivery vans, the crossings that feel awkward. It is part of the wider Streets for People programme to make Southwark cleaner, greener and easier to move around.

You can take part online — short survey, map-based comments, sign up for updates — and there’s a face-to-face drop-in consultation at Camberwell Library, 3–4:30pm, Tuesday 3 March. Come and speak directly to the team.

Surveys close 29 March.

If you take the 12, 35, 45 or any of the many buses through SE5, have your say.

Ten minutes now could save you hours at the bus stop later.
