Denmark Hill Station

In November 2020 the Society was awarded a Community Licence by Network Rail to care for and develop the non-passenger areas at Denmark Hill station. Since then we have transformed the station with planting and artwork as well as modernising the historic Victorian station – enhancing accessibility, sustainability, and the passenger experience.

The first task was to set about clearing the site of over 50 bags of rubbish, station users at that time will remember the unsightly walk along Champion Park with the deluge of litter behind the fencing. We have many more projects planned or in progress with the aim of making the station a destination in its own right so bringing people to the area as well as enhancing the experience for those already here.

Planting

We have been continuously working on the planting at the station with an avenue of acanthus with their dramatic foliage and summer flower spikes as a feature. We have cleared obscuring brush from the woodland fringes, and planted over 10,000 bluebell & poppy seeds along with 1500 crocus, grape hyacinth and daffodil bulbs. We have created a vineyard with 22 Bachus vines and a mini tableau of Provence with a game of pétanque in progress and a bottle of rosé wine definitely finished amongst a field of 56 lavender plants.
